The northeastern Ardakan quartzites in the Yazd block (central Iran) are exposed as lenses and layers interbedded with Paleozoic slate, phyllite, and dolomite. Quartz is the main constituent of these rocks, and textural and petrographic evidence such as undulatory extinction, granoblastic texture, and quartz recrystallization suggests that they have undergone weak to moderate post-depositional metamorphism. Petrographic and geochemical studies indicate that the quartzites originated from quartz-bearing sandstones of high mineralogical maturity, which were deposited under semi-humid climatic conditions. Rare earth elements patterns, including enrichment of light rare earth elements, depletion of heavy rare earth elements, and a negative europium anomaly, indicate a felsic and recycled origin of the sediments. The geochemical and tectonic setting discrimination diagrams also confirm that these sediments were derived from felsic sources on a passive continental margin, consistent with the region’s position during the early Paleozoic on the passive margin of the Paleotethys. The high percentage of silicon oxide and low amounts of iron and titanium oxides indicate the suitability of these rocks for industrial applications such as glass, ceramics, and casting production, although further processing is required for some applications.
