Preliminary structural and geological studies were conducted in a portion of Kalat County to identify areas favorable for intraformational water extraction and to prioritize sites for subsequent geophysical investigations and drilling new wells in the limestone formation. The study area is located on the northern limb of the Zharf anticline with a dominant WNW–ESE trend and an approximate length of 10 km. It comprises the Charam, Sini, and Idah Lik sub-basins, situated west of Kalat. The stratigraphic and lithological characteristics of carbonate and non-carbonate formations, regional tectonic elements including folding, faults, and joint and fracture systems, as well as karst geomorphological features, were investigated through field observations. The limestone member belongs to the Tirgan Formation, in which both thickness and the degree of erosion increase from east to west. Based on the annual discharge of springs within the sub-basins, the discharge-to-area ratio also increases from east to west, with the Idah Lik sub-basin showing the highest discharge ratio. This pattern may be related to the activity of strike-slip faults that have exerted progressively greater influence from east to west. These faults developed after folding and have accommodated regional shortening. Another important observation is that the folding mechanism is flexural-slip. Evidence of interlayer slip, manifested as slickensides along bedding planes, has created numerous voids between layers that provide favorable sites for recharge of the carbonate aquifer. Accordingly, considering the greater erosion, increased thickness of the Tirgan Formation, stronger evidence of dissolution, and the normal stress regime present in the Idah Lik sub-basin, this sub-basin appears to be the most suitable area for subsurface geophysical investigations and groundwater potential assessment.
