English

Qovaq Fe deposit located in 120 km southwest of Zanjan within the Urumieh-Dokhtar magmatic belt near the Takab-Takht-e-Soleyman subzone (Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone). This area composed of Oligo-Miocene volcano-sedimentary succession including intermediate to acidic tuffs interbedded by andesite-basaltic andesite, shale, tuffaceous shale, calcareous tuff and limestone, which are intruded by Qovaq intrusion (Miocene? age) that caused contact metamorphic aureole and Fe mineralization. The Qovaq intrusion composed of gabbro, pyroxene quartz monzodiorite, granodiorite and porphyritic granite with calc-alkaline to high-K calc-alkaline nature. This intrusion is classified as I-type metaluminous granitoids and was formed in an active continental margin. Contact metamorphic aureole composed of pyroxene hornfels, epidote pyroxene hornfels, epidote hornfels, calc silicate hornfels, epidote-bearing marble, marble and ore-bearing subzones. Magnetite and pyrite are the major ore minerals in the Qovaq deposit and accompanied with minor chalcopyrite and hematite. Ore minerals show massive, banded, disseminated, vein-veinlets and replacement textures. Petrographical studies of contact metamorphic subzones of the Qovaq Fe deposit demonstrate that this deposit can be classified as calcic skarn and was formed in three stages including isocheimal, prograde and retrograde stages. Textural evidences of contact metamorphic rocks are indicative to contemporaneous formation of garnet and clinopyroxene in 430-550 ºC and ƒO2=10-18-10-22.
